Abstract
- The article examines how folklore is utilized by Angolan author Pepetela in his novel "Yaka" as a means to undermine the dominant Portuguese colonial discourse concerning the history of Angola. The author begins by explaining how folklore in general can operate as a form of historiography. He then goes on to detail Portuguese discourse on African colonialism. Folkloric aspects of "Yaka" discussed in the article include rumors and the Yaka statue and its symbolism.
