Abstract
- The article discusses the history surrounding the Flight of the Earls from Ireland in 1607, with a particular focus on the political activity of the Catholic Archbishop of Tuam Florence Conry (Fláithri Ó Maolconaire). The role that King Philip III of Spain played in aiding the Irish-Catholic nationalists, including the native Irish leaders Hugh Roe O'Donnell and the Earl of Tyrone Hugh O'Neil, is discussed. The role that Conry played in seeking military aid from Catholic Europe for the Irish nationalists' war against Protestant England is also discussed.
