Abstract

This paper compares versions of the same origin myth collected from the Anga people of the Morobe Goldfields in Papua New Guinea in the 1930s and 2000s. It aims to show that myth is a form of "indigenous historical analysis" that reveals how local communities creatively make sense of, and seek to shape, past and future relations with each other and the wider global order. It further seeks to highlight the complex ways Anga communities articulate the causes and legacies of colonization, and how these are also informed by current local disputes and by dissatisfaction with perceived marginality and decline in the post-independence order.
