Abstract

This research was carried out with the objective of assessing the effect of substrates obtained from different proportions of the residue of wet processing of coffee and phlegm in a Ferralitic red soil typical of mountain on some of the quality indicators of seedlings of Khaya nyasica Stapff. in nurseries of this species. A design of randomized blocks with four repetitions and six treatments was used, and the following proportions based on percentage over total volume: 0-0-100; 10-10-80; 20-20-60; 30-10.60; 0-20-80; 20-0-80 of residue of wet processing of coffee, phlegm and soil respectively. The results showed that a combination of 30% of residue of wet processing of coffee with 10% of phlegm was the variant that allowed the seedlings to grow fastest, reaching 38cm high at 90 days compared to the control (23 days), this very variant showed the greatest depth, volume and diameter of the root neck, leaf area, with a reasonable index of slenderness (6.62 vs 8.31). According to these results we suggest the use of 10% of residue of wet processing of coffee and 30% of phlegm in the mixture with soil and in case these materials are lacking, we suggest the use of 20% of residue of wet processing of coffee in forestry nurseries close to coffee regions.
