Abstract

The article examines the performance of non-offset and 10° offset circle hooks in commercial pelagic longline fishing (PLL) in the U.S. It mentions that the basis of their performance are catch rates, percent mortality, and the percentage of deep-hooked target and bycatch species. It emphasizes that the offset circle hook can reduce fishing efficiency compared to its non-offset type. It also notes higher mortality rate in blue marlin by using offset circle hooks than the non-offset one.
