Abstract

The article offers information on studies which presents molecular basis of severe malaria. It provides information that Plasmodium falciparum can express different types of PfEMP1, Plasmodium falciparum erythrocyte membrane protein 1, which bind to alternative host endothelial receptors. It shows that parasites can avoid antibody response of host by switching expression between different var genes which encodes variant forms of PfEMP1.
