Abstract

The author discusses a debate on whether nurses should publish in 'impactful' journals. He analyses the merits of five of the most common arguments made in the discipline against impact. Measures of impact used to evaluate the contributions of nursing academics in various countries, including the impact factor (IF), the Source Normalized Impact per Paper (SNIP) and the h-index are presented. He mentions the significance of showing academic leadership and direction in the nursing professoriate.
