Abstract

The article discusses the U.S. airmen detained as prisoners of war (POWs) by the Soviet Union in Far East Russia during World War II. An overview of the Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin's role in the capture of U.S. POWs, including his fear of a Japanese attack on the Soviet Union, his desire to maintain neutrality with Japan and the U.S.'s diplomatic efforts to convince him to release the American POWs, is discussed. An overview of the U.S. POW fighter pilots' missions in the China-Burma-India (CBI) Theater of Operations, including their use of B-29 bombers to attack Japanese military and industrial targets, is provided.
