Abstract

The article discusses the canonization process in the Catholic Church from the pre-Nicene period when canonization was carried out by acclamation or vox populi to the post-Reformation era that emphasizes testimonies, heroic virtue, miracles and beatification as essential to sainthood. It also discusses the canonization prerogatives of the Papacy and the causes of some American candidates for sainthood including Father Gus Tolton, Father Walter Ciszek and Rose Hawthorne Lathrop.
