Abstract

The article discusses bilingual education in the United States, focusing on Spanish-language instruction in California. The origins of bilingual instruction is explored, citing attempts to help disadvantaged Latino children with their schoolwork. Problems with segregation and holding them back are described. It is reported that opposition to bilingual education is on the rise among Latino parents.
