Abstract

The article discusses the purportedly increasing influence of wealthy philanthropists in U.S. public education policy. It is said that business interests have been able to benefit from public funding of U.S. education, with continuing pressure for further privatization. Topics include the history of education philanthropy, the conservative advocacy group Philanthropy Roundtable and its funding of think tanks, and the pro-business advocacy group Business Roundtable and its influence on educational reform and standards. Nonprofit foundations such as the Walton Family Foundation, the Richard and Helen DeVos Foundation, and the Charles Koch Foundation are said to push for school choice legislation.
