Abstract

U.S. military chaplains have engaged persons of diverse faith groups in various ways throughout American history. Before the American Revolution, chaplains tried to convert Native Americans to Christianity. As the United States military became more pluralistic and more engaged in conflicts around the world, chaplains sought to win the hearts and minds of the people in the area of operations. For example, Chaplain William D. McKennon pursued peace with Filipinos during the Spanish-American War. The major influence that brought chaplains to the platform as instructors in World Religions was the involvement of the United States in Vietnam from 1962–1973. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
