Abstract

The article discusses californios' use of dance to prepare for war against Native Americans in Spanish and Mexican California. The author explains that apart from war, dance was an important aspect of californio culture. It is argued that the rhythmic skills, balance, and bodily control imparted to people from dancing could be beneficial to soldiers in battle. Types of dance discussed include the waltz and El Jarabe.
