Abstract
- The article reports that several U.S. states have adopted plans to require individuals being trained to become elementary school teachers to pass licensing tests that measure their ability to teach students to read. Challenges faced by several states, including Massachusetts and Wisconsin, in gaining legislator approval for such policies are highlighted. Comments from education professors Louise Spear-Swerling and Jennifer Mueller are presented.
