Abstract

The article reports that criminal charges have been filed against the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) which alleges the university and its faculty were negligent in the chemical laboratory death of research assistant Sheharbano "Sheri" Sangji. The article details the charges facing UCLA and chemistry professor Patrick G. Harran, focusing on the failure of the school to provide adequate laboratory safety training to its researchers. Efforts by the U.S. Chemical Safety Board and the American Chemical Society to increase government regulation over university laboratory safety procedures are discussed. Comments from Advanced Chemical Safety Inc. president Neal R. Langerman and nonprofit Laboratory Safety Institute head James A. Kaufman are highlighted.
