Abstract
- This article discusses the political and economic landscape in Indonesia during 2011. Topics include the dichotomy between the positive political developments of the pluralist democracy with free elections and polity problems from increased sectarian tensions and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's declining reputation, a prominent corruption scandal centering around the mid-level government tax official Gayus Tambunan and his alleged money laundering for Indonesian businesses, and the lack of state response to religiously motivated conflict against the unorthodox Ahmadiyah sect prompting criticism from non-governmental organizations.
