In this article we analyze two linguistic innovations which came about during the 2009 swine flu crisis. In terms of expression, over the week of study, new names were coined at the end of April to correctly denominate the illness caused by the H1N1 virus. In terms of content, according to scientists who criticized the WHO's management of this health crisis, this new flu altered the meaning of terms like pandemic so as to create fear in the population through the media and drive the sales of multinational pharmaceuticals.
