Abstract
- Objective: In this study, researching the utilization of KETEM records in estimating the incidence and determining the demographic view of cancer incidents reported in relatives of people who applied to KETEM is aimed. Methods: This descriptive record scanning study was performed on the records on 2007-2010 kept in Konya KETEM, in 2011. The necessary information for study was skimmed from the KETEM's data on electronic medium and transformed into an Excel file under the supervision of electronic record technician without using personal information. Results: Mean age of 21802 people who had applied to Konya KETEM in 2007-2010 was 44±12 and 94% of them were females. Applications were mostly made in March-April and their numbers decreased as the years passed. Totally, 46548 scanning were made on 21802 people about breast, cervix, skin, colon and prostate panels. 6556 of them (30%) reported cancer story in family and close relatives. Most frequently reported cancer types were lung, breast and colon. The relatives who were most frequently reported to have cancer were father, mother and sibling. Reporting cancer in a relative was related to smoking, menopause, age of last pregnancy and total breastfeeding time. Our findings related frequency of cancers from KETEM records were parallel to national cancer records. Conclusion: One third of KETEM applicants had cancer story in family or close relative and most frequently reported cancer types were breast and lung cancers.
