Reports on the efforts of the Chinese government to suppress the press prior to the 16th Congress of the Communist Party in 2002. Types of stories which journalists have been ordered not to report, including independent reporting on leadership changes and social ills such as dog-eating and violent crime; Increased freedoms afforded the Chinese press since the 1990s; Stories reported by Chinese newspapers despite such repression.
