Abstract

The article reports on the increase in measles virus transmission in the European Union region (EUR) since 2009. As of October 26, 2011, a total of 26,074 cases of measles had been reported in 36 of 53 EUR member states. The primary reason for the increase is reported to be the failure to vaccinate susceptible populations. The rise in measles virus transmission is seen as a serious challenge to achieving the regional measles elimination goal set by the 60th Regional Committee for Europe by 2015.
