Abstract

In December 2010, a book titled Die Träger der Goldenen Tapferkeitsmedaille (Recipients of the Golden Bravery Medals) was self-published by Jörg C. Steiner in Vienna. It includes 125 biographies of soldiers, recipients of the Austro-Hungarian golden medals for their bravery during World War I (1914-1918) as well as extensive lists of golden medal holders. Among the recipients were also Slovenian men and boy honoured for their bravery on different battlefields of World War I. Anton Polajnar was one of them and in his short biography he is presented here to the public. Within a relatively short period of time, new findings and documents were discovered that change and significantly add to what we have so far known about the life journey of this remarkably brave soldier. Who was Anton Polajnar, the forgotten hero of the Soča Valley battlefield? With perseverance and some luck with reviewing a number of archival and newspaper sources, a veil of oblivion could, at least for a little while, be lifted from the memory of this hero of the land of Carniola.
