The article discusses the collapse of ancient societies and considers modern parallels. It examines the views of several scholars, including Jared Diamond, Joseph Tainter, and Thomas Homer-Dixon. The author reflects on several cases of collapse, including those of the ancient societies of Easter Island, the Roman Empire, and Mesopotamia, or Sumer. Factors such as overpopulation, development, and innovation are considered.
