Abstract

In this article the author discusses the publication of large reference volumes such as handbooks, encyclopedias, and readers as a way that publishers attempt to create hyper-consumption. This practice is said to encourage self-plagiarism, produce academic work that is not read or cited, and represent academic capitalism. The multilingualism and intercultural communication research website Language-on-the-Move, located at www.languageonthemove.org, is discussed.
