Abstract

Widowhood has an emotional, economic and relational impact. This paper analyzes the transformations which take place in the personal support networks of widowed persons. In our analysis we have used different regression models (Poisson) in which we examine the effects of personal, contextual and attitudinal variables on support networks. The data come from the Social Relations and Social Support module of the International Social Survey Program 2001. Our conclusions show that widowed persons have smaller support networks than those in relationships, although there are differences based on sex. The greatest loss in support occurs in the secondary family network. Geographic mobility increases the family network but decreases that of friends. Familist attitudes and lower social trust contribute to maintaining these personal networks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
