Abstract

The article discusses the national security of the U.S. in 2012, an era of national decline and post-American exceptionalism. The authors trace the rise of the U.S. economy and its emergence as a world power from 1815 through the Cold War, commenting on its economic and natural resources. Topics include the financial cost of the Iraq and Afghan wars according to economist Joseph Stiglitz and Linda Bilmes and its impact on the U.S. ability to operate globally in economic and military senses. Also mentioned are the U.S. government's ideology of nation building under the assumption of a world political teleology towards democracy, and ways in which international cooperation and partnerships should change to accommodate the U.S. decrease in power in the global arena.
