Abstract

Spain was always an important reference in the life and mind of Santayana, and it shaped an indelible ground of wants, emotions and images. But Santayana's mind was educated in the United States of America and "his Spain" dwelled in it fundamentally as an idea: the idea of a protected abode, a sort of fortified refuge or sacred altar where to be on one's own to contemplate the eternal truths. The idea of Spain that the philosopher would eventually develop as the main source of his unique vital and autobiographical metaphor can be traced back through his letters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
