Abstract

The article discusses the decision of the People's Republic of China (PRC) to go to war with the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (SRV) in 1979, examining the role of Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping. It comments on several causes of the war, including border disputes between China and Vietnam, the Vietnamese invasion of Cambodia, and Vietnam's relations with the Soviet Union. The author also reflects on China's efforts for domestic economic reform and the normalization of Chinese relations with the U.S.
