Abstract

Cancer and cancer therapy, are associated with oxidative stress and balance disorders in the antioxidant system, this could be implicated in the toxicity and side effects associated with treatment with antineoplastic agents. This paper presents a literature review of the effect of antioxidants on cancer chemotherapy. Several studies suggest that supplementing the diet with antioxidants may positively influence the response to chemotherapy. These antioxidants prevent the oxidative damage generated by the chemotherapy treatment and the development of adverse effects, increasing the effectiveness. Other studies show negative results in the use of antioxidants during chemotherapy because they may interfere with the mechanism of action of therapeutic agents, reducing their effectiveness.
