Abstract: The application of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology to energy-intensive processes is starting to attract attention, presenting an opportunity for developing multi-user CO2 transportation networks. Recognising that most industrial facilities have not been designed with CCS in mind, this paper begins by looking at the practical issues associated with retrofitting CCS to industrial facilities. It then explores the technical and legal issues associated with building a CO2 network. This is followed by an analysis of the costs involved. Having identified the key issues, a case study from North East England is presented as an example of what is possible in an area of high CO2 emissions. The paper concludes by considering the issues involved in sizing a CO2 network which can evolve to meet future needs and linking that to the development of policy. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
