Abstract: The article presents a phylogenetic study that revealed Licuala as not monophyletic. The study resolved a group of species from Licuala and the rest of the Livistoninae and cited its relation to Joahnnesteijsmannia. It conducted a survey of Licuala specimens from several herbaria indicating eight species should be recognized within this genus.
