Abstract

The article presents a historical examination of the role played by Andean notaries in preserving the history of Spanish colonial South American through their recording of public records and translation of texts between the Spanish and Quechua languages. It explores the chronology of the spread of Spanish language knowledge amongst the Andeans during the late 1500s and early 1600s, describes the role played by Peru viceroy Francisco de Toledo and author Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayala in advocating for literacy education for indigenous peoples in the region, and comments on the development of an archives of Andean writings, called the escribanos de cabildo.
