Abstract

The article discusses the various ways in which the election of Karol Józef Wojtyla, better known as Blessed Pope John Paul II, shocked members of the Catholic Church and especially Europeans. The surprise registered in historical, diplomatic and religious ways, as John Paul II was the first non-Italian elected as Pope in centuries and came from Poland, a communist country. The political, social and religious aspects of this surprising election are briefly analyzed, and the article credits John Paul II's intense faith with his success despite the shock his election caused.
