Physician Specialty and Carotid Stenting Among Elderly Medicare Beneficiaries in the United States.

The article highlights a study which examined the use of carotid stenting among elderly Medicare beneficiaries in the U.S. between 2005 and 2007. The results of the study revealed that carotid stenting is being performed by diverse specialists within hospital referral regions (HRRs). The study also showed that the population-based utilization rates are higher in HRRs where cardiologists perform most of the procedure with similar outcomes.
