Abstract

The article presents a profile of Cleveland State University in Cleveland, Ohio and examines the efforts of university president Ronald M. Berkman to outline a plan for growth which focuses on the economic needs of the region and emphasizes undergraduate education. It examines how reduced U.S. federal and state funding for higher education has impacted the research agenda of the school's faculty and discusses changes to the expectations that are placed on the professors in terms of their class workload and research responsibilities. Other topics include undergraduate graduation rate at the school and comments from provost Geoffrey Mearns and vice president for research and graduate studies George E. Walker.
