Abstract

The article presents a historical examination of the ways in which the African American actresses Lena Horne and Etta Moten were portrayed in the "The Call," a newspaper published in Kansas City, Missouri, focusing on the time period of World War II. According to the article, depictions of Horne and Moten within "The Call" were aimed at downplaying racial stereotypes associated with African American entertainers. It also examines how these representations functioned as an aspect of the civil rights movement for African Americans. Other topics include the Double V campaign of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), an overview of the career of Moten, and discrimination against African American entertainers in the U.S.
