Abstract

The article discusses the trend in German philosophy of egoistic voluntarism whereby metaphysical theory finds its limitations within a nationalistic pro-German framework according to the scholar George Santayana. The author focuses on the philosophy of Gottfried Leibniz, Arthur Schopenhauer, Richard Wagner, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Martin Heidegger. Topics include the impact of this type of metaphysical thinking on the German dictator Adolf Hitler, Nazi ideology, and theorist Alfred Rosenberg.
