Abstract

The article discusses the teams of physicists at A Toroidal LHC Apparatus (ATLAS) and the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS), two detectors at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) which are being used to search for the Higgs boson and study supersymmetry (SUSY). The ATLAS and CMS collaborations both involve thousands of scientists who compete with each other to make discoveries. Physicists including Martijn Mulders, Sara Strandberg, and Maria Spiropulu discuss competition between groups, concerns about unethical behavior, and the culture of CMS and ATLAS. INSET: U. S.
