The article reports on the development of contact lens (CL) care systems. These systems, which were primarily intended to provide protection, through disinfection, to the eye against potentially harmful microbial agents that may attached to the CL ocular surface, were pioneered by electric-powered heat units in 1973. They have developed into multipurpose (MPS) CL care systems. Solution manufacturers are offering greater disinfection, regardless of patient compliance behavior.
