Abstract

A simple and rapid simulation of freak wave generation is attempted. This scheme is based on sideband instability in the evolution of wave trains. The modified four-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation is employed as a mathematical model. And the superimposed wave trains by carrier wave and sideband disturbances are applied to this equation as initial conditions. In the simulation, variations of wave steepness, scale factor and sideband disturbance parameter are respectively considered to explore the generation of freak waves. Results show that some values of parameters are very helpful to form freak waves. And according to this, the rapid numerical experiment is performed, and an example of freak wave generation are provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
