Abstract

In this article the author discusses financial planning for academic scientists in the U.S. She notes that academic scientists have a lot of responsibilities, including teaching courses, directing a laboratory, and writing grants. She goes on to say that academic scientists face the same issues as non-scientists when it comes to financial planning and that saving for retirement is overshadowed by economic stressors, such as child rearing, house payments, and gasoline prices. She argues that the income of academic positions and the length of time it takes to complete a doctoral education makes it difficult to build wealth early in a career.
