Abstract

The article discusses women's roles in the writings of John Lawson, an early eighteenth century naturalist and explorer in North Carolina. It examines his book "A New Voyage to Carolina." The author comments on Lawson's views on gender roles among both Native Americans and whites, particularly considering his remarks concerning the industriousness of white women. Other topics discussed include intermarriage between Indian women and white traders, Lawson's depiction of North Carolina as a garden, and his views on snakes.
