Abstract

The French suburbs, les banlieues, expanded after World War II. This paper first describes and explores this socio-spatial construct, as well as characterizes the relationship between the inner city and its outskirts, highlighting the stigmatization of the banlieue. But, is it possible for these two spaces and these two worlds to communicate? How can a dialogue be instituted? Is there a point of interpenetration? This paper analyzes how Annie Ernaux with Journal du dehors and La Vie exterieure and Faiza Guene with Kiffe Kiffe demain, Du reve pour les oufs, and Les Gens du Balto succeed in addressing this issue and offer means to bridge the gap between Paris and its banlieue.
