Abstract

The article cites the challenges in procuring organs for transplantation after death. It says that many organs for donations are declined due to non-function of the transplant and although scoring systems exist to aid donor and recipient selection, these have not been widely validated and are only used as guide. It adds that extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and extracorporeal organ perfusion are two of the most promising techniques to optimize the function of donated organs.
