Abstract

The article discusses the use of DNA sequencing in studies of ancient humans. Svante Pääbo at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology used ancient DNA to show that modern humans are the product of interbreeding between hominins like humans, Neanderthals, and Denisovans. Two theories of human origin are the Out of Africa model, which says that humans are descendants of an African population, and the multiregional model, which treats groups of hominins as a single evolving species. INSETS: REBUILDING ANCIENT GENOMES;JUST ANOTHER PROMISCUOUS PRIMATE?.
