Abstract
- The article discusses the history of noble art patronage in Spain during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Topics discussed include the cultural and aesthetic trends of the collectors of the time period, the connections between nobility and the intellectual activity of the country, and the increased value placed on painters and their artwork. Cultural traits of the paintings most valued are described, as well as the galleries and other areas of artistic display and the role of the Court in reviving artistic appreciation in Spanish culture. The examples of the collections and patronage of King Philip II are also described.
