Abstract
- The article discusses research by David Ainley and colleagues on why penguins fear the dark. Previous researchers attribute the penguin's apprehension after dark to its poor nighttime visual acuity. However, the researchers discovered that penguins have good nighttime eyesight, but prefer to be out of the water at night to avoid being eaten by leopard seals or killer whales.
