Abstract

The article evaluates the hypothesis that porous sedimentary rocks subjected to high strain may not form deformation band zones (DBDZs). The accessible faults planes at the Upheaval Dome impact structure in southeastern Utah reportedly yielded no DBDZ formation evidence and instead pulverized quartz grains in the adjacent Navajo structure were found. The article states that strain rates at Upheaval Dome are consistent with seismic slip rates along faults like the San Andreas fault.
