Abstract

The Johanine community was born from people who were suffering with the restoration of the Judaism after the destruction of the Temple (70 C.E.) and the synod of Jamnia (80 E.C). This group of Pharisees/Jews remakes and reconstructs the Judaism exclusively from the Law, in both Pharisaic and Deuteronomist perspectives, denying, however, that Jesus is the messianic “perfect consummation” of God. The texts of John 9,22; 12,42; 16,2 show us how the Johanic Jesus reproves the Jews and their ignorance about God (5,37-47; 8,19.53) and how the Jews also make clear their not-acceptance of Jesus in an aggressive attitude: the exclusion from the Jewish Synagogue. Even so oi VIoudai/oi (the Jews) occupy a preeminent place in the Fourth Gospel, the evangelist seems to have a hateful and limitless aversion toward them. Who are the oi VIoudai/oi in the Fourth Gospel after all? Was the author of the gospel anti-Semite? In this article we will tempt to distinguish and define who are oi VIoudai/oi (the Jews) of the Fourth Gospel and what was the exclusion from the Synagogue for the Johanine community.
