Abstract

The article presents guidelines for practice nurses about prescribing for type 2 diabetes in Great Britain. Based on guidance from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), metformin is the first-line treatment for lowering glucose in patients with diabetes. Sulfonylureas can also be used as first line treatment in some patients, especially those who are not overweight and have overt hyperglycaemic symptoms such as polyurea and thirst.
