Abstract
- The article highlights the fruit orchard planned by interior designer Betsy McClendon for her husband Scott's birthday, at their one-acre property in La Jolla, California. It relates that the land's clay soil and shade from towering pine trees posed significant challenges to the planting of fruit trees, but McClendon and landscape contractor Gary McCook dealt with these problems by planting the citrus trees in raised redwood beds and pruning the tree branches regularly. As of 2011, the McClendon orchard features citrus, stone fruits, apples, and grapes.
